Yeongcheon, promoted to the urban and rural compound city in 1995, is located southeasterly 350 km from Seoul and is also situated on the southeastern part of Gyeongsangbuk Province. Yeongcheon city is the pivotal city of North Gyeongsang Province, bordering Gyeongju and Pohang eastward, Gyeongsan and Daegu Metropolitan City westward, Cheongdo southward and Cheongsong and Gunwie northward. The total area of Yeongcheon is 920.4§´, which is corresponding to 4.8% of the gross area of North Gyeongsang Province(19,026§´). Within the total dimension, forestland occupies 636.93§´ (69.22%), farmland area 174.37§´ (18.95%) and the rest counts for 108.9§´ (11.83%).

Yeongcheon has temperate monsoon climate whose temperature difference is quite large between summer and winter seasons, which is typical to Korea peninsular. In summer season, Yeongcheon has a climate of high temperature and humidity influenced by oceanic climate while it shows cold and dry climate in the winter time due to a continental climate, thus resulting in extremely large temperature differences in both in summer and winter. The average, the highest and the lowest temperatures for the last 30 years were 12.25¡É and 39.4¡É(1994.7.20), -20.5¡É(1981.1.17) respectively, while average precipitation and sunshine duration per year are 1,021.8mm and 2,310 hours.
Yeongcheon is the granary belt where Mt. Boyeon which contains the spirit of Taebaek Mountains and Mt. Palgong westward and Mt. Woonju eastward surround and the upstream of Geumho River where the south stream and the north stream pass through. It is also the typical compound city with industrial features of both urban and rural communities, located between Gumi city and Pohang city.

Yeongcheon is the key point of traffic access from all directions, where Central Railway Line and Daegu Railway Line stretch east to west, and Seoul-Busan Express Highway, state roads and local roads pass through.

As of December, 2005, the number of companies registered in Yeongcheon was 7,502 and the employees numbered 31,570. In 2006 alone, total trade amount in Yeongcheon recorded US$415Million with US$301Million in exports and US$114 Million in imports.

Since early times, Yeongcheon has produced the best quality agricultural specialties from this gifted land with abundant sunlight, adequate rain and fertile soil. Yeongcheon produces the largest number of grapes in the nation and the grapes have the best possible quality that is very popular nationwide among customers. Also, since ancient times, Yeongcheon has been famous for the gathering of medicinal herbs and accumulating national fame for its advanced oriental medicine. Presently, Yeongcheon Chinese Herb Medicine Distribution Complex which occupies 30% of the national distribution of Chinese herbs makes itself represent Oriental medicinal City.

Yeongcheon has the great development potential since it is adjacent to big cities like Daegu, Gyeongju and Pohang and has such abundant tourism resources as Mt. Palgong and Mt. Bohyeon.

Yeongcheon which is surrounded by the spectacular Mt. Bohyeon and the crystal clear Geumho River is a town full of dreams, richness. Yeongcheon is also the place where a great number of ancient sages like Poeun Jeong Mong-Ju, Park In-Ro and General Choi Mu-Seon were born and is the home of patriotism and loyalty shown in the defense of Korea during the Japanese invasion in 1592 and 6.25 Korean War in 1950.
